Stick Season: Lichens and Twigs

November 8 - 10, 2018
1:00 PM
You are invited to spend a cozy weekend at Forest Lodge learning about nature in late fall. What is there to talk about in the woods when all the leaves have fallen and the trees just look like sticks? Plenty! Join Master Naturalist Emily Stone and Lichenologist Mary Bartkowiak to discover excitement hidden in November’s “stick season.” Emily will share her tips and tricks for winter tree identification, and Mary will delve into the wonders of lichen ecology and identification in the field. With these tools in your back pocket, even the dreary gray woods will be once again filled with life and excitement! The training begins at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday with an ecology hike and then an evening workshop on twig ID. Friday will be spent in the field on a beautiful Northwoods trail. Saturday morning will wrap up with activities to help cement your new knowledge in place. Enjoy evenings socializing in front of the fireplace. All meals are included. Registration is $200 with lodging at the historic Gatehouse, and $135 for commuters. Register online at by October 26. This workshop provides 14 hours of Master Naturalist Advanced Training.
